Stay the Course

If you’ve ever been to a horse race, you know how imperative a good start out of the gate is. The Rebels have managed to do just that and as we enter Week 4, you might think of it as approaching the first turn around the track, knowing a couple things to be true: 1) we’ve got a damn good horse and 2) there’s a long way to the finish line. All the expected names are trotting toward the front of the pack, and the Rebels are right there among them. We’ve got Georgia Southern this week, but they put blinders on horses for a reason! We’ll need to stay focused on our race and remain patient, as SEC play will be here before we know it.

Last week the Rebels traveled to Winston-Salemn and escaped with a relatively sloppy 40-6 victory over Wake Forest. Jaxson Dart said it all when he described the locker room as “disappointed” after the 34-point win. Why? Because we didn’t play to the STANDARD. Sure, there were a handful of highlights and encouraging signs, but the standard is much higher than that. Dart had two turnovers, and we gave up over 250 yards through the air. There were penalty miscues, among other things that will need to be cleaned up. With that being said, it’s always a luxury to be complaining about a 5 touchdown victory on the road. Our next road trip will be much more of a test, as we’ll head back to the Carolinas to take on the Gamecocks. For now, we’ve got the Eagles traveling from Statesboro, GA to worry about.

Prediction:

Georgia Southern is in an unfortunate spot here. We come off a game where we finally have some things to work on, and whether Jaxson Dart wants to admit it or not, the Heisman has to be looming in the back of his mind with another chance to pad some stats. Lane is good friends with Georgia Southern head coach, Clay Helton, meaning he may show some mercy; however, I think our biggest concern will be fans staying for four quarters. The line in this one is only 35 and we’re going to go ahead and lock it into the PICK 5.

Georgia Southern 3

Ole Miss 59

PICK 5: (6-4) 60%

1.) Georgia Southern @ Ole Miss -35

See above. Hotty Toddy!

2.) Michigan State @ Boston College -6.5

It’s the annual RED BANDANA game in Chestnut Hill. If you don’t know what that means then grab a box of tissues and watch the video linked below (phenomenal story). Boston College has looked like a damn good football team under new head coach Bill O’Brien, and the Red Bandana game has become a system play at this point.

3.) USC -4.5 @ Michigan

I’m not sure where Vegas thinks these Michigan points are coming from. The Wolverines have looked like Iowa in disguise this year. I’ll take USC, who actually has a quarterback and a much improved defense, to win this one easy.

4.) Tennessee -6.5 @ Oklahoma

If you don’t have a hammer ready, I’d get to an ACE hardware as soon as possible. Yes, I’m buying the hype. No, I don’t care that it’s on the road. Tennessee has the line of scrimmage, especially on defense, to control this game, and a quarterback who does not seem like a freshman. VOLS big. Don’t outsmart yourself. This is NOT a trap.

5.) Tulane -2.5 @ ULL

The Green Wave has had a tough two-game stretch, but I trust Jon Sumrall to get the boys ready to play on the road this week and take care of the Ragin Cajuns.
